Changes and Moar Gamez!

Straight to business, I’m getting out of L5R. There are numerous reasons for this that can be summed up by simply saying that the time and money I put into the game don’t justify the enjoyment I get out. And I’m going to leave it at that. Unfortunately for anyone who uses my checklist spreadsheet this also means that I will not be making future updates. However, as I understand it, the Oracle of the Void is now available from AEG and will soon support exporting, so my file is pretty much obsolete anyway.

In exchange for my card collection I’m getting a reasonable pile of board games that will no doubt get more play time and better bang for the buck. On the list are: Read more of this post

My first sealed deck tournament

Last Sunday I headed down to Myth Games with HappyDD for a L5R: Before the Dawn (BtD) release tournament. Each competitor got a starter and three boosters to construct a 30/30 deck. Because BtD only includes starters for Crab, Lion, and Phoenix, I wasn’t able to play as my usual Scorpion clan and decided on the Lion starter. I played a total of 6 games. The first four games were qualifiers and I won 3 of them.

L5R Inventory Checklist Updated

Hot on the heels of the original release I’ve uploaded a new version of the checklist that includes all cards from the War of Honor (WoH) set. Some of the cards in the set are similar to previously cards of the same name but have updated rules text, flavor text, artwork, and/or edition bugs. Take note that some of the cards are not bugged and are only intended for playing with War of Honor. Also, WoH includes a card called Ring of Flame that should not be confused with Ring of Fire as they have significant differences!

I’ve added a new page under the Resources section specifically to house these checklists so that only the latest version of the file will be available on the site at any time. That page can be found here: L5R Inventory Checklist

AEG customer service… amazing!

I just received a package from AEG with the missing items that I mentioned in my L5R review post. The items are a set of foil cards specific to my clan. Much to my amazement and delight, AEG included a Scorpion clan backed Imperial Favor card as well as a complete set of Scorpion clan plastic tokens! Thank you very much AEG!

The plastic tokens are made by Gale Force 9 and I’m quite impressed with the quality of them. Each token has a velvety backing on the under side and the details of the face side are very crisp.

Game Review: Legend of the Five Rings

This will be slightly brief review because I will be providing more specific content elsewhere… more on that below!

Legend of the Five Rings by Alderac Entertainment Group (AEG)
Official game website
As I stated in a previous post, I’ve recently begun playing a collectible card game (CCG) called Legend of the Five Rings (L5R). Three weeks ago I was wrangled into a demo game, picked up a couple of starter decks, and now I’m hooked. That’s not surprising I suppose, considering that’s what they’re designed to do. The game itself is very technical and complex, which sort of goes against the path I’ve been treading in regards to simplistic rules but there are some things that compel me to continue regardless.
